Underwriting
What Underwriting means
Underwriting is how the insurer decides whether to offer cover and on what terms. You answer questions about your health, family medical history, smoking, drinking, occupation and hobbies. Most applications are decided from those answers alone; some need a nurse screening, a GP report or a medical exam. The outcome can be standard rates, a higher premium, an exclusion, a postponement or a decline.
